Japanese tourney stamped cards

Post by berkumps » Thu Dec 09, 2010 2:49 am

I found a bunch of stamped Japanese Time Spiral cards amidst a load of crap, and was wondering if anyone had an idea if such a card would get stamped at a legitimately sanctioned tourney somewhere (possibly Japan 8-[ )? Below is an example of some of the cards:

Yes, it was probably at a Pro Tour or a Grand Prix.

I thought only English cards were used for GP/PT. Do they stamp stuff for side events?

In Japan and Korea there was a habbit of local stores stamping all the cards used in booster draft and sealed deck competition to thwart cheating. The Koreans usualy used a "chop" but Japanese ones I have seen used stamps much like these. They usually used a different one each week and rotated them.

Worked very well, reduced cheating to the store staff.....

Players complained that it ruined the value of cards. In the closed environment of Korea that was just an excuse.

I can look around, I think I still have some of the Korean ones.

Maybe of more interest would be the 3d edition cards I have with the stamp ML on them, anyone know what they are from??? I'll bet you can guess.

In Japanese Grind Prix day 1(sealed), all players except foreign players uses Japanese tournament packs and boosters. (I don't know day 2) Maybe day 2 also uses Japanese boosters.

Quite sure Day 2 uses Japanese boosters for the draft portion. Those will be stamped.

Looking at the past events on MTG website, I see that there was a Pro Tour in Kobe (Oct 20-22, 2006, Time Spiral booster draft), and a Gran Prix in Yamagata (Nov 18-19, 2006, Time Spiral sealed w/ booster draft). So I guess it's possible these cards are from one of those two events. Anybody here go to either event and remember the stamp?

On another note, does anyone want any of these?
