Should I open five packs of English language Portal three

Post by jamesham » Sun Mar 14, 2010 7:05 am

and sell the singles?
Or try to sell the packs unopened.
I don't want any cards out of the set, so just wondered what people think would be the best way to make some money.
Does anyone know about how much five unopened packs would be worth?
Cheers.

Hey James those are very qood questions - I too would love to know people's opinions.

Also if I could add one more relevant question...

What are people's thoughts about the current value of English P3K cards (and sealed product for that matter). Do you think we are hitting a value peak or can you see these cards continuing to climb as they have been doing in recent years?

Thanks

P3K singles or packs

My personal advice would be to sell the boosters, not open them.

P3K seems to have a very clear print run, with nearly the whole set in one box (At least for the chinese product), so if you do not know that the box was not cherry picked (open packs untill hit the money rares, sell the rest), the chances to come out ahead are pretty small. (Two uncommons in the booster.)

There are only five rares I would be happy opening and three uncommons, worth about the same or more than unopened booster. My understanding that unopened english product goes for about 60-65 $, if you are not in a hurry. My personal EV for the unopened booster is about 30 $, so I would not pay any more.

Rares worth enough to break even or better
Imperial Seal (significantly better, 225-250 $)
Ravages of War (150 $)
Overwhelming Forces (60 $)
Rolling Earthquake (75 $)
Zodiac Dragon (120 $)

Uncommons

Loyal Retainer (85-110 $)
Imperial Recruiter (125-150 $)
Strategic Planning (65-75 $)

And some that can be wrangled into some money

Wolf Pack (40 $)
Marshalling the Troops (40 $, please do not ask why. I don't have a clue)
Burning of Xinye (35-40 $)
Capture of Jingzou (30 $)
Huon Tuo, Honored Physician (30 $ EDH playable)
Riding the Dilu Horse (40 $)
Xiahou Dun, the One-eyed (25 $, again EDH playable)

Other rares are usually under 20 $, lowest go for under 3 $. Threa are some uncommons for 6-15 $ and some commons that go for over 2 $ (Fire Ambush, Imperial Edict, False Defeat and Three Visits), but with some searching can be found for under 0.5$ each from dealers, who have not updated their prices.

To be honest I made a lot of money opening P3K.... back in 2005.

Are prices really that high now? I'm just working out a price list and I guess I should raise them.
