Looking for print sheet images... for science! (to fix rarities on the Internet)

Hello Magic Librarians,

As I'm sure all of you are well-aware, back in the good old days cards could have sub-rarities: Common 4 was four times as common as Common 1. I recently discovered (and was surprised to find) that there is no accurate record of these rarities on the Internet! At least from the sources one would expect.

• The spoiler lists that Wizards posted to Usenet are inaccurate in some places [1] and incomplete in others [2]
• MagicCards.info reports to have this information, but it is also inaccurate in many instances. [3]
• Gatherer long ago contained this information, but at some point retroactively re-assigned rarities to do away with the repetition count (U1 became Rare, C1 occasionally became Uncommon). The original data likely comes from the spoiler lists, which are again, inaccurate.
• mtgjson, the new-ish comprehensive card database, never had repetition counts, and is sourced from Gatherer in most instances (so it also has some bad data.)

For the sake of brevity, I won't list all the errors I found. See the footnotes for a few examples, but there are plenty more. I started down this path a few months ago when, as a mini-project, I decided to try and submit changes to mtgjson to fix the rarities for older sets that follow this pattern. I wrote a bit of code that pulled the information from the original spoiler text files. Before submitting, I performed some sanity checks to cross-reference magiccards.info and sum up the print sheet sizes. That's when I noticed that many things did not line up, and started down a new path...

Not being able to trust the closest thing I had to a primary source, one must go to the only truly reliable source: the print sheets. I've been able to find a few from ebay auctions or random websites [4], but some of them still elude me. That's where I'm hoping you all can help. If you happen to own any of the following sheets, or have pictures of them, I'd very much appreciate that you post them here. It will put me on the way to verifying the information that I have and providing what information I don't.

I've managed to find sheets for Antiquities, The Dark, Fallen Empires, Legends, Beta (Uncommon only - Low Quality), and Chronicles (Uncommon only).

Here's what I still need (if they even exist!):

• Alpha - Common (What was in CoP: Black's place?)

My goal is to submit this information to be included in mtgjson, which many sites now use as a backend card database, and is among the better sources of information available today. I will additionally submit fixes to magiccards.info; I tried once and never heard back/saw changes on the site, but that doesn't mean I won't try again :-).

[1] Unholy Citadel and Seafarer's Quay are universally reported to be U2. But if the spoiler is to be believed, then the Legends uncommon sheet would have 123 cards - obviously wrong. Inspecting the sheet shows that these are in fact U1, just like the others in the cycle; everyone is wrong in this case. In Homelands, the setlist and spoiler (both published by Wizards) disagree for many cards.
[2] In Alliances, the same cards have multiple arts by the same artist, but different rarities and the setlist/spoiler do not point out which is which.
[3] ATQ Strip Mine's are all over the map and magiccards.info incorrectly reports the Tower as C1 and No Horizon as U1 (which is backwards: they are all C1 except Tower which is U1).

I confirm that Unholy Citadel and Seafarer's Quay are U1. From Legends Uncommons sheet and Italian Legends Uncommons sheet (cards are not placed the same way on the Italian Sheets). In the future, there will be eventually a subsection about Uncut sheets.

At this point, the current questions are primarily around Chronicles, Alliances, and Homelands (thanks again for those!).

For Alpha , Circle of Protection: Black and Volcanic Island were omitted, and there was only 2 illustrations for the Basic Lands (3 in Beta)

I retrieved some info from 2005 about Alpha , Arabian Nights and Legends from old times members:

There are 4 "RARE" Islands on the Beta and Unlimited Sheets, 5 on Alpha. 1 of the Alpha Islands was supposed to be the rare dual land Volcanic Island.

There are 26 Lands on the Uncommon Sheet broken down as 2 Islands, 6 Swamps, 6 Plains, 6 Mountains, 6 Forests.

There are 41 Lands on the Beta and Unlimited Sheets broken down as 10 Islands, 9 Swamps, 8 Plains, 10 Mountains, 9 Forests. There is one additional land on the Alpha Common sheet that took the spot of the C.O.P Black.

For Arabian Nights, there are 7 levels of rarity (U2, U3, U4, C1, C4, C5, C11), corresponding to the number of times a particular card appears on a sheet. The U3 and C1 levels are identical in frequency. A booster had 2 Uncommons (U2, U3, U4 or C1) and 6 Commons (C4, C5, or C11).

It stands to reason that the Arabian Nights sheets were eleven-by-eleven - unlike the eleven-by-ten sheets of today. There certainly were some Commons that were more Common than others - there were eleven copies of Desert for every one copy of Mountain on the Common print sheet! Likewise, there are two copies of Oasis in existence to every one copy of Juzam Djinn.

Glad that you found what you were looking for.

I've also heard that the Alpha sheet layout is identical to Beta except that Volcanic Island & COP: Black are basic Islands. (I'm not sure which art.)

Jim Bruso has seen Arabian sheets at Carta Mundi Belgium. It was a long time ago, but also several years after they were made, so clearly they were being saved and hopefully still exist somewhere. No pictures though unfortunately.
I know of a misprint collector that is trying to reassemble the sheet layout using miscut cards.

I noticed already one major problem with Alliances Uncommons while I checked all of them on the 10 X 11 Print sheet:

In Gatherer Gorilla Shaman both versions are listed as Commons:

In the Wizards check list one is a U3 (Version 1) while the other one is a U2 (Version 2), but they are both U3 in fact.

I'm almost done verifying the Commons. There's one problem with the Whites ones, 19 on the check list but 20 on the print sheet, meaning one C1 is a C2 in fact, and it's Kjeldoran Escort (v. 1) ...

What I'd like to do eventually is to finish writing a bit of javascript that shows a print sheet next to a list of each card in the set/sheet and allows you to hover over either to see indicators on the other side. The idea is to have some interactive proof that the data is correct (mtgjson, for instance, wants some record to verify -- though this would be going above and a little beyond that). Of course, there would be a downloadable json file that maps it out for anyone who might want to suck in the data.

I've started on it and am well on my way there, of course paying work has been busy lately so that has to take priority. Promise I will finish it though and post updates here.

As, I've added 2 extras pics of the Chronicles sheets in my first post. I did the Chronicles Common and Uncommon sheets. I didn't noticed any mistakes. What was the problem with Chronicles, something regarding the Uncommon sheet or else ?
