Question about different Mirage printings

Post by berkumps » Wed Mar 05, 2008 6:20 pm

Is it possible to tell the difference from the boosters/starters whether you will open the dark print (rough) or light print (smooth) print variations? Are the two print variations a result of printings in Belgium & US?

I believe these different styles of printing were also found for Visions & Urza's Saga? I know there was an old topic about this, but could not find it (I will admit, I didn't look too hard).

Thanks for any info

This is a question for Keith. He knows quite much about this. He explained me once about it.

If we go far about this, we'll end up collecting alternate Mirage, or Carta Mundi Mirage set...

Any one got some scans of examples of the differences? What are the telling signs?

I think this shows it. One on the left is darker (obviously) and rougher texture, one on right is light and smooth texture.

The dark Mirage is printed in US, the light one in Belgium at Carta Mundi. The german Mirage is a light one too.

So, in other words, we need to buy one US English Mirage and one European English Mirage.

Will have to check mine. Thanks Mr Foilcard !

I just found a whole pile of these in a box of Visions if you're interested.

To be confirmed : a seller in France is selling Mirage boxes printed in Canada, but they are terribly expensive, so I will wait.

You can tell which printing it is for starters by looking at the gold foil. All of the made in Belgium starters I own have the gold foil closer to the middle of the deck.

But now I guess the question is...

Which batch/ printing of these cards is the prining that is EXTREMELY dark? Several Mirage & Visions cards are so dark that you can't even read them.

And, this light/ dark issue also exists in Urza's Saga. You can't help but notice it in the green & blue cards.

Yes, only the green and blue cards show it very well. I have also some white Tempest cards that have this dark/light differences.
