Magic Phone Cards....How Many?

Post by dragsamou » Tue May 16, 2006 2:28 pm

Hi Members.
I try to find out how many MTG Phone cards exist, and if these cards exist
with a different amount of Minutes.
Krosan Beast.Kev Walker.Odyssey.30 Minutes.Odyssey.
Shivan Dragon.Donato Giancola.7Th Edition.60 Minutes.
Sengir Vampire.Kev Walker.Torment.100 Minutes.
Silver Seraph.Matthew D.Wilson.Judgment.250 Minutes.
While the Silver Seraph was not mentioned in the Magic Arcana topic about it.One more mystery remains, does a fifth one exist, since All the Colors are represented except the Blue?

I recall there has been another set which featured artwork from Black Lotus, Serra Angel, and a few other cards. It was advertised years ago (I think 1995) in some trading card magazines like The Duelist. I can look it up if you are interested.

Hi Ralph.
With pleasure,as I try to establish a List of All the MTG Phone cards that exist,I 'm sure that our International and especially Japanese Members may have some others not known or mentioned yet.

There is a Squee, Goblin Nabob phone card. I think it was 200 minutes.

I have looked it up:

It all started in November 1996 when MCI PrePaid advertised three Magic rechargable prepaid phone cards to be sold by local retailers. One featured artwork of Serra Angel, one of Jester's Cap, and one of Dakkon Blackblade. All three had a capacity of 20 units. The cards could also be used to access DCI rankings and Arena ratings.

At the beginning of 1997, the sortiment was enhanced. Two new phone cards were made available. One had artwork of Balduvian Hordes and a capacity of 20 units, the other one had artwork of Black Lotus and a capacity of 30 units. The functionality of all cards was expanded to access tournament schedules, game information, and more. The phone cards could from then on also be ordered from MCI Prepaid directly.

In the middle of 1997, all phone cards were upgraded. They now had a capacity of 25 units, the Black Lotus phone card even received a capacity of 50 units.

After that, no more advertisements appeared, so the fate of these phone cards is unknown. It is possible that additional versions were introduced or the existing versions were altered again, before this product line was dropped.

Since the number of units was printed on the cards, completists will need two sets of these phone cards, one with the higher and one with the lower unit capacity.

Anyone know the value of these? I have a couple, but never thought much about them - kept 'em in their wrappers.

Archivist: Yes, my information is based upon advertisement. I have found it in The Duelist magazine issue #14 and in consecutive issues.

Hi Members

I dig that old topic as I just created a new section about those. Any help or input is welcome in order to solve some mysteries:

Do you own that phone card ?
A commemorative 1997 World Championships Limited Edition prepaid phone card was given to DCI Legend members (only for members who joined or renewed before September 1, 1997). The illustration and number of minutes are unknown.
Does anyone received that phone card back in the years or even seen one ?
Magic Phone Cards advertisement in the Duelist issue #15 February 1997
Does anyone can provide me a HQ scan of the advertisement in The Duelist #15 to replace the LQ one in the index. More advertisements exist, but I have no idea in which issues, I only own The Duelist 1 - 14 (December 1996), so I still need the info about the Duelist issues and HQ scans also. I don't know if the MCI prepaid phone cards advertisement was also in different MTG related magazines.
It is currently unconfirmed that the phone cards were produced. The information is based upon advertisements.
Does anyone have ever seen any of those MCI prepaid phone cards from 1996 and 1997. I've never seen any in the last 10 years, as I try to collect all of them.

Thanks Tim, I know real well unfortunately, this has turned to a real nightmare, but I don't give up till I'll find them back. Never again, I will move stuff from my "to classify, to sent box" to I don't know where.

Thanks to Jim Bruso, to finally solve that mystery:
I have been a member since 1993 and was never given one of those. The only thing they gave out as a membership cards to Dakon black blade but never a phone card.
