Compilation of Magic Memorabilia

Post by chaosdjinn » Tue Jun 02, 2015 7:43 pm

Hi Alexis,
Was wondering if you were soliciting pictures/back ground stories/dates for the memorabilia section you have placed on the front landing page?

I wrote an article for mtgstocks.com focusing on the outlier segment of the Magic collectible promo market but the website owner there thought it too off-target for mtgstocks.com(they only deal with card prices). The article featured the 1994 Nightmare two-sided door poster- 'Magic Sold Here,' a 1999 MTG Mind Sport baseball cap, The 1997 Arena Vampiric Tutor 24x36 poster, a Mirage/Visions one-player Spellground Playmat, and several others.

From hats to posters to backpacks to window clings to pewter miniatures to wrist watches to store displays to even the very weird portal binoculars, it's been a goal of mine to be in touch with and/or acquire these outlier collectibles since the beginning of the game. I've acquired a significant portion of my goals and still pick up store displays, counter displays, posters and other odds and ends as they come out from my friends who own stores. I can take pics, provide anecdotal histories and discuss values if you're interested in that sort of angle.

Now you know why I sought the highly elusive GP Bangkok Avatar of Hope 8th ed. Box Topper from you- to collect the last one of the whole damn set! That thing WAS NEVER in the wild and I checked regularly on all the auction sites...and I still do to this day...

I'm a madman...might as well use that to the site's advantage if you'd like.

With the 25th Anniversary just 3 years away, more eye candy from the early days and even newer promos might be another interesting facet to add to the website.

Please pm me if you're interested.
Thanks and hope all's well,
Matt

Hi Matt

Only the title is there for now. As a first step, Magic Memorabilia needs sections and subsections that need to be organized very well, in order to add so many things, and I really don't have the time for it right now, and I will also totally rely on the help of others for histories, pics, scans, etc...Then, once sections and subsections are defined, they need to be added on the website by the webmaster, in order that items can be added. So, for now, I have wrote few things on a paper, but if you and others, are willing to help, let's build the structure of Magic Memorabilia in the next post.

Re: Magic Memorabilia

Post by chaosdjinn » Wed Jun 03, 2015 4:33 pm

Hi Alexis,
I am attaching parts of a spreadsheet (attachment feature did not work so I copied and pasted below)) with a partial list of what I have and/or know about.

I stopped accounting for memorabilia in around 2004/05 but still have been picking a lot of things up; just haven't had time to put them on the spreadsheets.

The first 10 years of the game are pretty much all-inclusive; not much outside of my list existed (except official WOTC prerelease banners/pro tour placards/etc.) I did have two prerelease banners but sold them to stores who could display them (they were huge- 4'x8').

I have another 12 years worth of memorabilia that is not listed- from the Garruk M2015 Stand-up to the hot-hot-hot Liliana window cling to the Helvault to the Ugin's fate counter display.

I am long overdue to start accounting for all the new posters etc. so I will start grouping them by year.

I can take pics and provide a history on all of what I've gathered.

looking forward to working with you.
Matt

Hi Matt

Your list is quite impressive. I have started also a list of Memorabilia things that I did wrote on a big piece of paper, I didn't add the Magazines and comics as there's already the MAGAZINE GALLERIES section, I didn't add neither what's on Magic Rarities (Life Counters, 9X12 cards (In Oversized Cards), etc...
I have tried as a first step to name sections and subsections, and add few items of course some words used might not be the perfect ones, but there's so much, and we can always add more, change them, merge subsections, etc...Let me know, what you think is missing as Sections and subsections (Not items, there's thousands of them). On my part, I never made a list of my own Memorabilia MTG stuff that I own, I have 3 big boxes full of I don't know what's inside.

Do you think categorizing them by section/subsection would be best? Or would the evolution of memorabilia be better viewed in context of each year's zeitgeist? I think if we do the section/subsection it become disjointed to try to view a collectible in context of its era. As opposed to cards which rightfully fall into specific category over time(Arena, FNM, Judge), the more esoteric memorabilia such as posters/window clings/handouts are more relegated to a time frame/card set/release schedule in context of the other items of similar origin.

Kind of like a museum, you view the artifacts in context of the timeframe in a diorama.

Let's say we use my 1995 list as an example:

If we featured all 1995 items on one page and listed them as such, it would evoke a return to the zeitgeist:

1995
1995 Wall Calendar
ACCLAIM M:TG Comic Books Poster
ARMADA M:TG Comic Books Poster
DUELIST Erhnam Djinn Poster
Elder Dragon Comic Book Poster signed by Ed Beard, Jr.
Fourth Edition Gift Box
Fourth Edition Poster featuring multiple card arts
'Ice Age has arrived" Poster
Ice Age poster by Richard Kane Ferguson
"Magic: The Gathering I" Tournament Invitation with Baron Sengir artwork
"Magic: The Gathering I" 18"x24" Poster with Baron Sengir artwork

By looking at all of them in context of each other, then it brings the viewer back to the experience (in this case, Ice Age era/ 4th/early MTG comics/Homelands).

If we separate them by category, and put the posters from 1995 with the posters from 2005, the gravitas of the the MTG Year 1995 gets lost in the shuffle.

Separating by category becomes even more complicated when you factor in subsections of subsections; Large posters (24x36) vs. small posters (like in booster boxes), promo items (Betrayers of Kamigawa cardboard throwing stars and the counter stand-ups for BOK that simulated the Samurai being beheaded by a fast, unseen Ninja).

Please give it some thought; my sense is to make every memorabilia page a time capsule reflecting the promo items, posters and other accessories surrounding the game itself. The pages can be by year, or by set, or by block or some combination thereof.
For example:

In the beginning: The Gathering
(1993-1994)
The Charity Fellowship's 3 Poster Set of Beta edition cards with catalog
Magic: The Gathering (SOLD HERE) Poster featuring Nightmare artwork
Magic: The Gathering (SOLD HERE) Poster
INQUEST Mummy Poster
"The Lost Mox Diamond" Postcard signed by Dan Frazier
"A Multiverse of Infinite Possibilities" Poster
Revised Gift Box
"Multiverse of Dominia" Poster

..........
Then it could be chronological within the year and set and release schedule specific-

For 1997, from my lists, it could look like this:

PAGE- {Year} 1997
Subsection {set-centric memorabilia}

1997 Visions Memorabilia
Visions Counter Display featuring the artwork of Firestorm Hellkite
Visions poster featuring the artwork of Mundungu
Arena Outpost Folder featuring Vampiric Tutor artwork
Arena Outpost Poster featuring Vampiric Tutor artwork ](*,) {took me 16 years to find this poster}

1997 Weatherlight memorabilia
Weatherlight Poster "A Legacy of power: The Future of Magic"
Postcard featuring the art of Avizoa
Postcard featuring the art of Lotus Vale

1997 Portal I Memorabilia
Portal Binoculars
Portal Poster

1997 Tempest Memorabilia
Tempest poster featuring exclusive Weatherlight artwork
12"x18" Chronatog Oversized Card
12"x18" Greven il Vec Oversized Card
12"x18" Helm of Possession Oversized Card
12"x18" Magic Card Back Oversized Card
12"x18" Pillar Tombs of Aku Oversized Card
12"x18" Rathi Dragon Oversized Card
12"x18" Relentless Assault Oversized Card

1997 Vanguard Memorabilia
Vanguard Uncut Sheet

Truth is that I'm already swamped between real life, Magic Rarities section, etc...So, I really don't have the time for the Magic Memorabilia section.
Now, I don' t mind if it's per year or else, but on a technical level, you really need to understand how it works on the website:

STEP 1: Create a Section or Subsection with the appropriate name
STEP 2: Create a Logo and find all the info possible and write the text to go in the index of the subsection, add pics and Internal and External links if necessary
STEP 3: Create tabs to get inside the subsection (Images, Year, or else)
STEP 4: Use the program to add any cards, items, filling 10 different fields or more one by one
STEP 5: Use the program to add pics or scans (All the scans or pics need to be cropped, resized, etc...To fit with the others of the same categories)
STEP 6: Have the webmaster add the section/subsection on the website
STEP 7: Verify to correct any errors, typo, etc...

As an example, I create a Magic Badges subsection not added:
http://www.magiclibrarities.net/921-rar ... index.html

This was done in more than 72 hours, so many badges and scans are missing, logo is not created.

So wondering how to proceed if per year as so many items will need to be added per year and space is limited on a section page ?

Can I suggest building upon MTGSalvation Wiki's lists of memorabilia (such as http://mtgsalvation.gamepedia.com/Magic_merchandise)? Merging your lists and organizing on the wiki would make it easy to collaborate, and then final lists can be moved to the site when Drag's time allows.

Hi Matt

Trying to figure out how I can build and organize the Memorabilia structure. I'll let you know.

Well, looks like someone is already adding things there out of the work that I did yesterday and the day before, as I just find out looking at your link. They could at least wait that I'm done, and mentioned references...

This is a HUGE endeavor, I think once we get into it we will find there is way more memorabilia than we can possibly manage. It's great that someone is finally tracking it all though! Don't forget all the event t-shirts under clothes! :) I also have a scarf from I think World 2007? I haven't gone through all my swag in a long time, I'm sure there are other things not yet on this list.

Hi Tim

This is indeed just a first approach, out of the paper list that I did, and through a lot of hours of research already, I didn't even went through my 2 huge boxes, and others places where this stuff is hidden. Most important is finding a way to build the structure, cause if based only on Dates, the list of items without precised date will be huge. Anyway this is a monstrous task..

I am banned from MTGSalvation...
#-o

Can't even open another account...already tried...they frown upon that too...
>:-(

So...I will categorize what I didn't list earlier and list it here and if someone would be so kind, please upload it to Salvation along with my earlier list.

I can provide pictures of everything on my lists when it is time. \:D/

The Magic: The Gathering Vintage Accessories group on Facebook might also be of use in this.

I belong to most of the MTG FB groups, to collect info, unfortunately they have turned into clones of Ebay, and in general the only thing people care about is $$$ and finding "how much it's worth", etc...I also find out that people owning a scan and knowing how to use it is an endangered species.
