Recent Theft of Some 6,000 MtG Cards

Post by notsofasteddie » Fri Jan 18, 2008 8:06 am

My good friend and fellow collector of MtG cards recently had a large portion of his collection stolen by a "friend." As you might imagine, he is devastated. He is trying to get the word out to the members of our community so that this thief may be caught and punished appropriately.

Here is an email my friend is circulating around:

"My name is Sean Dugas. I am writing you this letter as a result of having a large portion of my Magic collection, nearly six thousand cards stolen from my house Wednesday afternoon.

If you see this man (Photo Attatched) come in and try to sell you Magic the Gathering cards please call the police! He is under investigation for stealing nearly $20,000 worth of cards from Pensacola Florida.

We believe he was heading to Warner Robins Georgia where he has family, or the Sacramento California area.

Any help in this matter would be appreciated.

Thank you
Sean Dugas

If the cards were sold on Ebay or any other card online store, it would be difficult to know it's him.

It would be good to mention his name too.

Stealing from a friend is quite ugly...

Since you know who he is and what he looks like, can the police not help?

Or if you know his ebay name (if he has one) that would be good

Ebay

Post by equi-nox76 » Fri Jan 18, 2008 2:34 pm

I received this from an Ebay member some days ago:

Hallo equi-nox76,

Chris, Thank you for your interest. Shipping & handling to Germany would be $15.00 via Priority Mail no matter how many you purchase. All of the Magic cards I have listed right now are MINT. These are from a collection of a former Wizards of the Coast employee. I have about 200 of each of the cards listed. I understand your caution. I would encourage you to buy a couple sets, check them out, then contact me and purchase more if you'd like. You will not be disappointed. If you are interested in buying in bulk we can work out a discount.

He seemed to have many cards and wanted to get rid of them as soon as possible... a day later all of the cards were taken out of Ebay :-k

Might be a track?

Chris

The guy actually looks pretty shady

It's always sad to read about these major thefts, like that one in New York.. Hope it has a good outcome!

If he is heading towards GA, you might want to look up some of the Atlanta shops and pass this along. The Gaming Pit in Deluth is one of the more prominent shops that he may try to move some of this stuff to. I'll try to copy this in an email to them.

EDIT: I emailed this to The Gaming Pit. I'll try and dig up some of the other smaller shops and pass it along to them too.

My sympathy to your friend. Having had thousands of dollars of cards stolen by people i invited into my house I understand what he is going through. It changed the whole way I approached collecting magic. good luck.

The Police are involved although they've turned up nothing yet. The thief's name is Richard "AJ" Jeffries.

Thanks for your suggestions and for the support! My friend Sean is experiencing something that each of us has hoped would never happen to us.

The thief, Richard "AJ" Jeffries, was taken into custody today in Glendale, California. Unfortunately, the police didn't have an active warrant so they released him. If you're playing in a West Coast Morningtide Pre-Release event this weekend, be aware of any deal that is, "To-Good-To-Be-True" the cards may well be stolen so check the list that was added to this post earlier.

The good news is that some of the cards were sold locally so they have been recovered; the bad news that the cards may have to be re-purchased so that the un-knowing buyer doesn't end up short.

In truth I don't know. Even if he was, it will be difficult for him to document and prove the value of the cards to his insurance company.

This should be a sad lesson to all of us who collect as this has happened before, will happen again, and could happen to YOU!!

Depending on who your "friends" are...

I was in Glendale today myself! He would likely go to Franks (today) cause it's close and the best place to sell a bunch of cards cause the main dealers have lots of cash with them. Pre Release dealers are lame across the board when it comes to selling stuff..

I have kept all the Ebay invoices of all the things I have bought so far. All I would need is print them.

The value of the cards is either based on an invoice or on the current market value (Ebay completed auctions for instance), or Inquest Gamers/Scrye pricelists.
