huge new update coming

Post by Ralph Herold » Thu Jan 26, 2006 6:34 pm

Dear members,

I usually do not announce specific updates. After a discussion with member dragsamou, however, I have decided to announce that I am already working on a huge update on a technical, a structural, and a content-influencing level which will start with Magic Card Sets and ultimately affect the whole website. As a consequence, regular updates, especially for Magic Rarities, will only take place in small numbers for the time being. Fortunately, I am already in correspondence with a few selected people with whose I hope to speed up work.

I am currently testing the new layout I have created (HTML 4.01 + CSS 2.0, all hand-written) with different browsers. As a side product, I became aware that the Magic Library website just sucks when viewed with a browser different than Internet Explorer. I knew that the old code forged over years by different editing programs under an inferior level of knowledge would be a little messy, but I definitely underestimated the problem. I wonder why nobody has told me this all this time...

I've been using Firefox for a while and never thought it looked all that bad. In fact, I don't see many differences when opening it up now in IE7. I guess some of the blue blocks are larger in FF, but it's not really all that obscene looking...

Incidently, I also usually just visit the board, heh :)

Ralph,

I tend to use Netscape and haven't had any problems with the site.

I do not mean problems in the league of broken images or dysfunctional links. I mean more subtle flaws like misaligned text, misplaced spaces between elements, and inconsistent table formats. While they do not render the website useless, they diminish its aesthetical value. I plan to tweak the new code to fully eradicate this problem.

Ralph I've been experimenting with rolling divisions over on the Stone Rain Project, that allows me to display as many cards on one row as the user's screen is able to display, instead of just roping the user into 3 cards per row. If you are interested in the technique, feel free to explore the site and borrow as you see fit.

I am happy to announce that a very unpleasant span of time is now lying behind me, and I will have time to work on the website again, at least for the next few months. I will update Magic Rarities with the most crucial information and then continue to work on the huge update. Do not expect wonders, but expect progress.
