Interested in making a set of Tokens, need input

Post by Dilligaf » Thu Mar 23, 2006 8:43 pm

I know the whole token set thing is WAY overdone, but i'm also fairly small time and am interested in making sets of tokens for my local players (and anyone here who may be interested)

I'm talking with a local artist who has agreed to do the art for me, and i plan on putting my Reaper logo on the backs along with the name (Mostly Harmless Cards)

What i need from you guys is a list of common creature types you would want tokens for:

obviously:
Goblins
Saprolings
zombies

anything else? im looking to make 5-10 different ones. at least for now.

Dilli / Mostly Harmless Cards

There are two ways to approach this. Either target your local Metagame, which means see what decks are playing token makers locally, or target it on a wider scanle, which involves a little reasearch of a wider scales for decklists. Doing tokens on whims of members here may not be the best approach. Doing a little homework to see what might actually be used will work out the best for your project.

the problem i have is that my "local" metagame covers most of Texas.

Texas, as many of you will know, is "kinda big"

Which is why i have posted this question.. simply put, my metagame is too big and i need help.

The other popular, but less relavent tokens are squirrels (a personal favorite of mine), Angels, and Dragons. They don't get used a lot, but they would entice more collectors to pick up your token sets if that's how you're going to sell them.

I'd suggest Soldiers. They are White (whereas the tokens you mentioned are Black, Green and Black), and at least here in Italy "Raise the Alarm" is getting quite popular (especially on an Isochron Scepter ;-D )

There are certainly a lot of cards that generate Insects.

You could go to the extreme of making tokens that haven't received much attention previously. Why not make sand tokens, kelp tokens, caribou tokens, chicken tokens, prism tokens, twin tokens, camarid tokens, hornet tokens, citizen tokens, plant tokens, wolves-of-the-hunt tokens, etc.

If I had to pick useful tokens I would pick dragon, bear, saproling, goblin, demon, squirrel, pegasus, insect, wurm, elemental, thrull and sheep.

I love how you mention Thrull token as a useful one ;-)
Fallen empires forever! I also think it would be cool with some of those more odd tokens, one that comes to mind would be a "djinn of the bottle" token from Bottle of Suleiman :D
Maybe im just crazy ;) How about asking people on the next mtg event that you attend to?

Ok, List so Far:

Goblin
Saproling
Squirrel
Zombie
Angel
Dragon
Soldiers
Kelp
Thrull
Minion
Bat
Dry_cereal
Insects
Sand People
Caribou
Chicken
Prism
Twin
Camarid
Hornet
Citizen
Plant
Wolves-of-the-hunt
Bear
Demon
Pegasus
Wurm
Elemental
Sheep
Voja
Djinn
Elephant
Spirit
Illusion

Ones that are actually likely (for now):
White
Angel (*/*) Flying
Soldier (1/1)
Pegasus (1/1) Flying
Spirit (1/1) Flying

Blue
Illusion (1/1) Flying
Weird (3/3) Flying?

Black
Zombie (1/1)
Demon (*/*) Flying

Red
Goblin (1/1)
Dragon (*/*) Flying

Green
Saproling (1/1)
Squirrel (1/1)
Insect (1/1)
Bear ? (1/1 or 2/2)
Elemental (*/*)
Wurm (*/*)
Elephant (3/3)
Sheep (1/1)

Gold/Colorless/Artifact
Spirit (1/1) [forbidden orchard]

I'd like to maybe do 2 for each color for the first set (with the intent to do others... but i make no promises) Those bolded are the ones i think are probably the most useful right now.. but i need a second blue. Perhaps the wierds from Thunderheads?
