ALPHA, BETA, GAMMA AND OTHERS PLAYTEST CARDS

Playtest cards added in the different tabs were cleaned, cropped, etc. for better esthetical purpose and protection.

ALPHA PLAYTEST CARDS

Alpha playtest cards were Richard Garfield's two-person hand-drawn set (120 cards) on yellow cardstock. 120 cards is mentioned in the: The Duelist #0 (a free printed flyer from when Magic: The Gathering was introduced at Gen Con in 1993.)
* Cards have a hand-drawn illustration or nothing at all and in a few cases, the entire card is hand written.

Here's a super-difficult trivia question. What two people played the very first ever game of Magic? Okay, one of them was Richard Garfield. That was the easy half of the answer. Who did he play against?
The answer: His name is Barry "Bit" Reich.

Barry is a gamer. Barry is also a friend of Richard's. Important to this story is that Barry was friends with Richard while Richard was designing Magic.
We talk a lot about the original playtesters (here's a few whose names you might recognize: Bill Rose, Charlie Catino, Skaff Elias, Joel Mick, Jim Lin).
These were people who were gamers and friends (or friends of friends) of Richard's during the time Richard was creating Magic.
When Richard needed a group to playtest the new game he was making, this is who Richard turned to.
The day that Richard put together the very first Magic deck, Barry was lucky enough to be the person Richard wanted to try out the game on.

As a quick aside for those that want to know more about the very first Magic game ever played, Richard made a single 120-card deck with all five colors and artifacts and then split it in two for them to play.
The games were played for ante, as all original Magic games were, and the two played until one of them had an unplayable deck.
When Barry and I talked about this many moons ago, Barry claims that he had the honor of winning the very first game.

A few other facts about Barry. His nickname Bit came from the fact that he was both small and a computer science major (and now a computer scientist). Barry was the first one to build an all-artifact deck.
He worked hard to trade for most of the Moxes in the environment (there weren't many, as Richard kept the card count low to reflect what he felt would be the real-world play experience—yes, Richard guessed wrong on that one).
Richard's favorite Magic-playing memory of Barry was that Barry loved playing Sea Serpent, and whenever he got one into play he would growl and get a plastic snake out of his bag that he would throw on the table.

BETA PLAYTEST CARDS

Beta playtest cards were the ones after Alpha. Multiple variants exist that were done at least in two different phases:
* Cards have a hand-drawn illustration, an illustration or nothing at all and in a few cases, the entire card is hand written.
* Cards are white, beige, blue, green or yellow.
* The circles in the upper right and sometimes down middle were printed blank to be filled with an appropriate color by marker. Sometimes, there was no blank circle, just the color done with a marker.

Both Phase 1 and Phase 2 are similar in some aspects. Those playtest cards have a circle that is colored in it. They are a bit more primitive. In some cases, it is hard to tell whether they are Phase 1 or Phase 2.
Creatures in phase 1 have ONE NUMBER, Creatures in phase 2 and 3 have both power and toughness.
All playtest cards in Gamma have an actual letter instead of a colored circle.

Back in the early 1990's, before Magic cards were ever found in booster packs, Charlie Catino was one of the myriad playtesters from the University of Pennsylvania that Richard Garfield tagged to help get the Alpha card set
(and game rules) ready for public consumption.
I sat down with Charlie and asked him about the ins and out of testing that historic first few hundred cards…

“I was just a playtester,” he warned me. “I wasn't involved in many decisions; I just played the cards and reported my findings.”
Actually, that's not so different from how I and other neophytes around R&D begin our training as developers nowadays: play a lot, talk about what's happening, and let the more experienced people fix the problems.

“Richard just wanted us to show him what could be done with Magic,” he continued, “but the cardpool was very limited.”
Testing then, it turns out, was not at all like the constructed testing we do now, where we assume competitive players will obtain the maximum allowable copies of any given card.
No, instead Charlie and the gang were playing something akin to an unrefined sealed deck league, with small numbers of cards available.
“We basically printed about 20 common sheets [a sheet is approximately one of each card], seven uncommon sheets, and two rare sheets and divided them up among our group evenly.
So even if you count the cards the guys had that were testing before us, there were only about five Black Lotuses available total.

And if you wanted access to any of those cards, you had to go out of your way to trade for them. “One of the main decks I made at the beginning was black-white with Pestilence and protection from black creatures.
From there I wanted to try something that used a lot of black mana for big Pestilences and Drain Lifes, so I tried getting a lot of Dark Rituals.
Rituals #2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 weren't hard to get, but then people started getting nervous—'Charlie is trying to get all the Dark Rituals! Don't trade them!'—so numbers 9, 10, 11, and 12 were a lot harder to acquire. And I couldn't get any more after that.”

What Richard was looking for was an understanding of how enjoyable the game would be to play—the social experience was as important as the deckbuilding and the playing.
“He didn't think people would spend hundreds of dollars on Magic,” explained Charlie, “but if they did spend more, hey, that's great—we'll fix whatever's broken.”

That comment led me to ask Charlie if they realized the “power” cards of the set were so far above the average card from their play experience.
“We caught the power cards in time to give plenty of feedback to Richard,” he said, specifically calling out the Moxes, Time Walk and Ancestral Recall.
“Again, no one could make a deck with all Moxes—or even all dual lands—because there just weren't that many of them. So we never ran into really degenerate situations.”

Was Charlie in a position to suggest costs or abilities for cards? “No, the first playtest group [Skaff Elias, Jim Lin, Chris Page, and Dave Pettey] did most of that—the costs were settled on.
Richard was a great designer, sure, but he was also a great developer. He just wanted to make sure there were plenty of combos, and that we could understand the rules interactions. There weren't rulings for a lot of the stuff that could happen.

“I remember when [fellow playtester] Barry [Reich] played Unsummon on one of his creatures that was about to die, and we said, 'You can't do that! Richard didn't want it to work that way.'
So Barry explained what he did to Richard and why he thought it was cool and that it should work that way, and Richard said sure. So there was a little bit of 'system development' going on.

“We played for ante a lot; my favorite deck for that was a bunch of common weenies like Merfolk of the Pearl Trident and Scryb Sprites, some Counterspells, and a couple Ancestrals.
If you beat me all you'd win was usually some little 1/1. Bill [Rose] and I and the rest of the guys in Philly didn't really like ante, so we stopped playing that way, and didn't really ever try stuff like Demonic Attorney and Contract from Below.”
Too bad they couldn't convince Richard to abandon that portion of the game—I still remember getting Demonic Attorney as one of the rares in the first starter deck I ever opened!

I asked Charlie if there were any cards he remembered being changed as a result of their testing. Library of Leng leapt to mind. “It originally let you set aside ten cards from your collection in a pile and draw from them.
So one of the testers had a deck that used a bunch of Time Walks and counters and Swords to Plowshares to control the game, then would play the Library and go get a bunch of Serra Angels and Mahamoti Djinns to win the game with.”

One card that didn't change, though, was Chaos Orb, “even though we all hated it,” laughed Charlie. “And the players in the real world pretty much hated that thing too.”

Eventually the playtesters discovered the art of “proxying” their own fake cards, and the decks quickly became mathematical exercises. What wins faster, all Black Lotuses and Channels and Fireballs, or Time Walks and Ancestral Recalls?
“Richard was aware all this stuff could be done ahead of time, but again, he figured if people were spending enough to be able to do that stuff, that was a good problem to have.”

GAMMA PLAYTEST CARDS

Gamma playtest cards were the third, all cards have illustrations.
It is, with very few exceptions (False Orders, Mosquitos (Will-O'-The-Wisp), Magic Ruthy, Magic Skaff) complete with illustrations, casting costs, and text.
There are many clarifications in this version as well. Naturally, it is the closest version to the actual printed set.
Gamma playtest cards measure approximately: 2.125" x 2.75" (5.4 cm x 7 cm), smaller than regular MTG cards.

From the creation of Magic: The Gathering by Richard Garfield (page 6 to 8 of the Pocket Players Guide, Revised Edition published in 1994).

Chapter from Alpha to Gamma
:

For the Gamma version, new cards were added and many of the creature costs were increased. We also doubled the pool of playtesters adding in a group with Strat-o-matic Baseball experience.
We were particularly anxious to dind out if Magic could be adapted for league play.
Gamma was also the first version, which was fully illustrated. Skaff Elias was my art director: he and others spent days poring over old graphic magazines, comic books, and game books searching for art for the cards.
These playtest decks were pretty attractive for crummy for black-and-white cardstock photocopies.
For the most part the cards were illustrated with serious pictures, but there was a lot of humourous ones as well. Heal was illustrated by Skaff's foot.
Power Sink showed Calvin (of "Calvin and Hobbes") in a toilet; after all what is a toilet but a power sink? Berserk was John Travolta dancing in Saturday Night Fever, Righteousness pictured Captain Kirk,
and Blessing showed Spock doing his "live long and prosper" gesture. An old comic book provided a Charles Atlas picture for Holy Strength, and a 98-pound weakling getting sand kicked in his face for Weakness.
Instill Energy was Richard Simmons, the infamous Glasses of Urza were some X-ray glasses we found in a catalog. Ruthy Kantorovitz constructed a darling flame-belching baby for Firebreathing.
I myself had the honor of being the Gremlins. The pictures and additional players greatly added for the game atmosphere.
It became clear that while the duels were for two players, the more player playing, the better the game was. In some sense, the individual duels were a part of a single, larger game.

Chapter Striking the Balance:

Each playtest set saw the expulsion of certain cards. One type of card was common in Alpha and Beta, rare in Gamma, and is now nonexistent: the type that made one of our rival's cards yours.
Yes, Control Magic used to permanently steal a creature from your opponent. Similarly, Steal Artifact really took an artifact. Copper Tablet no longer even remotely resembles its original purpose, which was to swap two creatures in play.
("Yes, I'll swap my Merfolk for your Dragon. On second thought, make that my Goblins-they're uglier.").
There was a spell, Planeshift, which stole a land, and another, Ecoshift, which collected all the lands, shuffled them, and redealt them-really nice for the user of four or five colors of magic.
Pixies used to be a real pain-if they hit you, you swapped a random card from your hand with your opponent.
These cards added something to the game, often in the form of players trying to destroy their own creatures before theit opponents took them for good or even trying to take their own lives to preserve the last shreds of theit decks.
In the end, however, it was pretty clear that the nastiness this added to the game environment wasn't worth the trouble, and no card should ever be at risk unless players choose to play for ante.

It was around this time that I began tp realize that almost any decision made about the game would be opposed, often vehemently, by some players.
The huge amount of dissent about what should and what should not be part of the card mix led players to make their own versions for playtesting-a significant task that involved designing, constructing, shuffling, and distributing about 4'000 cards.
Each of these games had its merits, and the playtesters enjoyed discovering the quirks and secrets of each new environment.
The results of these efforts will form the basis for future Deckmaster games that use the structure of Magic: The Gathering while containing mostly new cards.
