Special Guest Gift Cards

Index | 2008-2021

From time to time, Wizards/Hasbro decides to create Special Guest Gift Cards given to Events as a present to some personalities to honore them as MTG fans.

ACTORS SPECIAL GUEST GIFT CARDS

The Actors Special Guest Gift Cards were made on a different card stock by a third party. They have the size of normal MTG cards and a glossy back.
They were sent to their managers before the Hollywood Pro Tour that took place on May 23-25 2008, trying to get those actors to come to the Pro Tour.
At least 15 to 20 sets (45-60 cards) are supposed to exist. Each actor was sent a set and remaining cards were distributed to WotC employees involved in the project.

ROBOT CHICKEN GIFT CARDS

The Robot Chicken is not a real card but a color copy sticker glued to a MTG card. Apparently, they were given after PT San Diego (19-21 February 2010) to the Robot Chicken writers attending it.
According to only one Robot Chicken Writer, there's at least 6 given in existence. No further info is available at the moment.

The card number 42/1138 refers to: 42: The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy as the "Answer to The Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything".
1138: One of George Lucas' early short films was Electronic Labyrinth: THX 1138 4EB, later remade into the feature film THX 1138.
After the film, references to 1138 (and sometimes to THX) are scattered throughout Lucas' films, Lucasfilm productions and LucasArts computer games.

From Wizards.com
*Robot Chicken is a show that combines chaos, action figures, and hilarity to keep gamer-centric personalities rolling on the floor with laughter.
But it turns out that behind all the pop-culture references, the action figures, and the chaos of their writers’ meetings, the staff at Robot Chicken are big Magic fans.

From Hugh Sterbakov, Robot Chicken writer:
I'm one of the RC guys who was at the show. They sent them to us afterward as gifts, in nice sealed cases. Really nice of them, we were all flattered to see our chicken on a Magic card.

They're real cards, or they look like real cards from outside the case, anyway.

As far as I know, there are only six in existence. At least, six people in our crew each got one. I'd be pretty surprised if any of them ever turn up on the aftermarket. It'd be like selling a personal gift.
But we got really nice scans of them up, so anyone can proxy them or whatever.

It is known that Fake Robot Chicken Gift Cards have been offered.

THE SORCERER'S APPRENTICE

From Wizards.com, July 12, 2010:

On July 14, the Disney movie The Sorcerer's Apprentice will be released into the world. And it's going to have a Magic tie-in!

One of the characters in the movie is Drake Stone, played by Toby Kebbell. And in the world of the movie, Drake is sponsored by Wizards of the Coast.
He's such a celebrity that (in the world of The Sorcerer's Apprentice) he even appears on cards.

And that means that actual cards had to be made for the movie. And instead of just mocking up regular cards, Magic R&D was called upon to make new cards for Drake Stone's appearance.
They even made him a Planeswalker!

So here, for the first time anywhere, is a look into the world of The Sorcerer's Apprentice through the prism of its four custom-made Drake Stone Magic cards that only appear in the magical world of cinema
(and one pre-existing card that seemed like a natural fit)!

While the cardboard standee was used in the movie (product placement), it is not known at the moment if those digital cards were even printed internally by the R&D Department of WotC.

POST THE ENCHANTER

For the birthday of Post Malone (American rapper) in July 2021, a special real MTG card was gifted to him by Wotc: Post the Enchanter illustrated by Chase Stone.
It was a foil alternate art version of Zur. Complete text is not known for now, and there's not HQ pics available as it was only shown on Youtube.
