Test Prints Waldfeen/Scryb Sprites and Others

Post by dragsamou » Sun Mar 01, 2009 2:31 pm

Hi Members.
The first time ever, I heard about those was on the Great Misprint Website of Squt:
http://members.tripod.com/~squt/MainError.html

Over the years, I find out that these cards were Test Prints from WOTC.
All of them are in German but have the 1994 copyright text in French. They have the casting cost, text, and power/toughness of another card.

Samite Healer/Grizzly Bears
Mesa Pegasus/Scryb Sprites
Holy Armor/Shanodin Dryads.White Border Front and Back
Blue Elemental Blast/Unholy Strength

First time I have seen some of these. The swamp/mammoth and the plains/wall of wood look nice. Is your H/W list updated? I would like to acquire any of these that are available.

I very much want some of these but mostly I want the Holy Armor with the white border on the back. Money or "heavy" trading (Alpha, Beta, UL booster packs and such).

Hi Guys.
I didn't post those for a sale promotion, as they belong to my Test Prints Collection, and just for Members to enjoy.I just have 3 Extras that I rather trade for missing ones, if not to sell them.
Samite Healer/Grizzly Bears
Mesa Pegasus/Scryb Sprites
Healing Salve/War Mammoth

My H/W list are not updated at all, as I was away from the forum for monthes.I'm working slowly but surely on them.I will keep you informed. Thanks for your interest.Take Care.

Hi Chris.
I thought so too at first, but when over the years, I did get in touch with old former employees of WOTC, they all confirmed to me, that they were Test Prints. Also, some Artists received some of those directely by WOTC, as Amy Weber wrote in her auction.
"This is a misprinted card from the collectable card game Magic: The Gathering. I am pretty sure this is a counterfeit card but I thought someone might enjoy it for their collection. It was given to me when I worked at Wizards of the Coast. It is in mint unused condition. The artist Amy Weber is the one selling the card."

Hi Mark.
The only one that I know about so far is the one from Squt's website.

In 1996 in my town some Vietnamese were selling Magic cards to the kids. The packs were cheaper than normal and contains such 'misprinted' cards. One Magic player of our group has buyed such a booster and he throw the cards away. Unfortunately I never buyed such a pack, so I can't confirm this whole thing.
But I also believe that these cards were fakes. Alexis, you should check the cards carefully (print dots, bending test,...).

Why should someone counterfeit cards and do such mistake in the copyright date line and title?? I think this mistake is intentional.

This jogs my memory. I remember something about some real low quality counterfiting about that time. ATM I don't remember any other details except that the cards were crap and easily spotted by anyone that knew the game. But, that is all I remember.

I will go through my pile of counterfit junk when I get home and see if any of it is worth posting. Some might be interested.

Hi Hans.
No point to make a bend test. And I really don't think that WOTC will send counterfeit cards to Amy Weber, not mentioning that at least 3 former employees of WOTC have confirmed to me that they were Test Prints, also some Members of this board have told me the same thing as they own some of them.

From Squt's website
"Real" fakes:

For a while now, I have known about some really crazy picture misprints that have been floating around on the secondary market. They all have German text, the wrong picture, and a FRENCH copyright date. They also do not use the standard 'Magic' Font for the name of the card. I never have published anything on these cards, because I just couldn't figure out where they were from. I have recently aquired a copy of one, and with it a little more info.

First of all, let me preface this by saying that these cards are fakes. They do not feel as sturdy as a real card, and indeed they do not stand up to the bend test (they crease). However, I aquired one of these cards from a former WOTC employee, who insists that multiple copies of each exist, and that they are from WOTC. My best guess is that these cards are test print cards of some kind, made on an inferior card stock. They can't be just plain old mistakes, because the number of errors and the consistancy of the errors between the cards. There may be many more of these floating around out there, but to my knowlege, these three are the only ones that have turned up on the secondary market:

Fake or not

Post by equi-nox76 » Wed Mar 04, 2009 3:05 pm

Anyway, even when they are test prints they're of no interest (for me), since everyone having the equipment and one of those as a pattern could fake them. Also someone who buys them could not tell them apart since he/she does not know which one is the "real" (if they are) and which one the "fake" test print one. Our company cooperates with a specialist concerning prints (for our documentation, flyers, ... we sell) and they could copy them as many times as I would like to have them (I guess they're not the only one who could). Particularly when the cards don't have to pass the bend test and maybe some other signs of real Magic cards.

I am confused.

I own one (got it from Amy Weber) and it's exactly the normal MTG carstock (passes the bend test by the way), with a perfect MTG back and the dot pattern looks like normal older white cards too (I have the Mesa Pegasus picture).

Just the colors are a bit brighter and of course the font is different. picture's wrong etc.

In other words, mine at least looks exactly like a WOTC produced test print.

Hi Enrico.
I never check mines, as I have Never submit a bend Test to any of my cards so I can't say if they pass the Test.
