Hi Tav

From this info:

The Shepard Poorman Communications Corp. was a large commercial printer located in Indianapolis, Indiana. In the mid-1990s, Shepard Poorman was contracted by Wizards of the Coast to print cards for Magic: The Gathering. Shepard Poorman printed the Chinese-language version of Fourth Edition, as well as providing part of the Mirage print-run intended for sale in the United States. Boxes containing cards printed by the company have the words "Printed in USA by Shepard Poorman Corp" on them.

And while helping Mark about the Manufactured MTG Products topic, it happened that I find out that Rivals Gift Box were made also by Shepard Poorman in July 1996:

Shepard Poorman also printed the 1996 Arena promos:

On another note, the US English Urza's Saga booster rare sheet was at least printed by Yaquinto, as it says:

"yaquinto job# 3601 MTG: Urza's Saga Booster (EN)"

Hi Members

To add more about the Rivals Set, I dig that old topic about Rivals cards, they are indeed different from regular 4Th Edition cards

Hi Members

More info about the cardstock:

The stock that Magic cards is printed on is called Corona and it is only produced in three factories in the world, Argio Wiggens in France, Kohler in Germany, and The United States Playing Card Corporation in the US. However the USPC only produces the stock for their own use and does not sell it.

There is a domestically available stock called Corona but this is significantly different and lower quality than the Magic card stock. The cheaper stock is more prone to delaminating from humidity, curling from ambient heat, and ink failure due to lack of porosity.

The line in the middle of the stock is usually described as a plastic but it is a graphite laminate. It is used as a security feature but this is incidental. This layer is what gives Magic cards their “snap” and resilience to being bent and shuffled. It is most often blue and is colloquially referred to as the “blue layer”, however it is sometimes black as well depending on where and when the stock was manufactured. Many cards printed by Shepard Poorman have a black blue layer.

A common complaint with new sets is that the paper is thinner and cheaper however, with few exceptions, the card stock has not changed appreciably since Alpha. It has been shown that the card stock thickens and stiffens with time and humidity. This causes cards which have been open longer and played more to have a different feel than cards fresh from the pack.

Thanks for that info Alexis. A couple years ago I had found online that the cardstock was called Corona, and I think the source of that information was Mark Rosewater, but when I went back to look for the website, I couldn't find it.

Oh, one more thing, the card stock is available in different weights.
I think Magic cards are about 310 GSM (Grams per Square Meter).

I don't think so.
Carta Mundi doesn't make their own card stock, they purchase it already done. 310 GSM should be a finished product figure.

United States Playing Card Company Does make their own card stock.

So then the sheets they use for card fronts and the sheets they use for card backs should be 310 gsm each?

Again, I don't think so.
Carta Mundi doesn't make their own card stock, they purchase it already done. 310 GSM should be a finished product figure.

Carta Mundi does not assemble the front and back of the sheets or apply the blue layer. They are a printer not a paper maker. They purchase various stocks ready to print on.

This info is stated in the following video, 50 seconds in.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rsrrMgotapQ

Card backs are printed before card fronts.

If you see a misprint where the front doesn't align with the back...
1. It's not caused by improper gluing of the paper layers because Carta Mundi doesn't do that.
2. I don't think it's caused by the printer grabbing the sheet wrong because the sheet would have to be grabbed identically wrong for each color layer if the color layers line up properly (picture quality).
3. More likely the sheet changed size (had a bit cut off or torn) after the back was printed but before the front was printed. If the sheet aligns with one edge, then a wrong size sheet would cause some peculiarities.
