Number of commons, uncommons and rares in products

Post by l0qii » Wed Dec 28, 2011 6:10 am

The question comes up sometimes about whether a Starter had 2 or 3 rares, or how many cards were in those packs with less than 15 cards. Well I found this old text file on my HD tonight with packaging info for sets up through Urza's Destiny, so I'm pasting it here. Please feel free to add info for newer sets.

I'm pretty sure there were 3 rares in each revised starter. As for C/U, I don't remember.

should be 3 as seen here
Go to 1:20 in this video and he says that some English revised print runs had 2 rares and some had 3 rares. That is the way I remember it also.

You learn something new every day! I had never known this about English Revised. I heard somewhere that ITL FBB starters had 2 rares, but never knew there were some English ones with 2. Were there basic lands on the Revised rare sheet?

On another note, the cards he is opening in the video look like FWB Revised to me, based on the coloring. Also, an English revised starter box should have Crusade and Hurloon pictured on the top, whereas this box has Hurloon and Craw Wurm pictured.

So when you buy a sealed box of english Revised starters, how do you know if you are getting 36 rares or 24?

I've opened plenty of Revised starters, all had three. At that age, it made sense to buy starters, as you couldn't search them, but you could search packs.

60 card starter decks (2 rare, 13 uncommon, 45 common, rulebook) originally retailed for $7.95. 10 decks per box.

During the last part of the printing, starter decks had 3 rare, 9 uncommon, and 48 common. Land cards could appear in the common and uncommon, but not the rare slots.

The cardstore I worked at back in '94 ordered Revised starting from the very beginning (April), and none of the starter decks ever had 2 rares in them. I feel like if this happened, it must have been localized or regionalized, otherwise everybody ordering revised starters when they were released should have had 2-rare decks.

I seem to recall a switch to 3 rares from 2 also...

I know this is an old thread, but I just got my account activated.

I bought a few starters of revised in Albuquerque NM back in 95 and they all had two rares in them. I saved two starters from that batch and I'm fairly certain they both contain 2 rares. I'll try to get my mom to take some pictures of them (they live in a cabinet in my brother's old room) and you can compare them with what you have. It may take up to a week to get those photos though.

My mom is awesome and pulled through immediately. Here are two albums of pictures for the two boxes.

I was trying to find other starter pictures and didn't come across much. I saw this photo on ebay (which I've mirrored in case it gets bought) and I notice the gold foil tails line up exactly while the tails on mine don't. http://imgur.com/a/10hXR

This indicates that different machines were used to wrap these boxes or that the calibration started to drift. If it was different machines, perhaps there were other differences?

Hi fancyman, welcome to the forums!

Good observations with the Revised starter decks. Now all you need to do is have your mom mail you one of the old starters and upload a video of you opening it so we can all see if it's got 2 or 3 rares.

Kidding of course... :-D

It sounds like the consensus is that older Revised starters used to have 2 rares and then they started printing them with 3 rares. This is consistent with what I vaguely remember...
