4th edition from 1996

Post by Beoulve » Tue Aug 18, 2009 6:22 pm

Ok, first off I just have to say that I'm a n00b when it comes to Magic: The Gathering. I collected Magic for a couple of years back in high school, but haven't bought a single card in 12 years. I recently downloaded Magic: Duels of the Planeswalkers on Xbox Live and decided to dig up my collection and take a look at it.

I have discovered some miscuts/misprints and other irregularities, and was hoping to get some insight on this forum.

First off:
I don't know if this is common, but I have some 4th edition cards from 1996. As you can see in the picture below, the 1996 version has a different typography than the normal 1995 version. Also the edges on these cards seem to be rounder than the normal 4th edition cards.

I scanned Murk Dwellers because the difference in typography is very obvious. 1995 4th edition on the left and 1996 on the right:

In the blue 1996 4th edition cards, the copyright text is in white rather than black.

I believe the 1996 is fifth edition.
BGS 9+ Alpha set 282/295 (97.29%) Avg 9.41
BGS 9.5+ Beta set 283/302 (93.71%) Avg 9.58
BGS 9.5+ Arabian set 35/92 (38.04%) Avg 9.62
BGS 9.5+ Antiquities set 82/100 (82%) Avg 9.64
BGS 9.5+ Legends set 279/310 (90.00%) Avg 9.61

5th Edition is 1997, but I believe that the introductory 2-player game had a 1996 copyright. See here:

Aha! Thank you for clearing this up!

You know, back in 1997 I was in Spain, and I bought a couple of spanish versions of that set, and it has 1996 on it as well... DOH! It all makes sense now! XD

So are these valued at the same price as 4th edition cards?

There are also (I believe - from a good source) starter packs (60 cards) of these released in English only, in Europe. I have a few loose cards but no packaging.

Can anyone else confirm this as well?

If anyone has collected a global set of a card that was in the base set you will know how hard some of these may be to locate. I think they should be worth way more than the regular english(or spanish) 4th equivalent due to sheer scarcity. One of these is literally the last version I need for my set and not all of mine are even in the best shape.

EDIT
Also I opened an english one:

They come with two decks:
60 Black,blue red
60 Black, Green,White

One of the deck's is called Zakk's and the other is Kazz's.
