Price difference amongst Beta RARE, when there are equal printings of each RARE

Good Afternoon, my name is Greg and I would like to ask a question pertaining to Alpha and Beta cards.

The question is, with regards to Beta cards, there were 117 Rare cards and there were 3,000 copies of each Rare card printed.

I was wondering why is there such a huge price disparity amongst the 117 Rare cards, being that there are the same amount of card copy for each Rare.

Thank you very much for your help.

Hi Greg

Playability and popularity is the main reason.

Playability and popularity
In that order and a wide gap in between, if may say so ;-)

Similar to other collectibles, price is usually determined by

Condition
Rarity
Desirability

So a rare card in bad condition can sometimes be worth more than a rare card in good condition if it is useful in a deck.

Hi Greg,

In addition to what has been written above, *playable* rare cards are supposed to have been heavily played for 25 years, if they have not been damaged, bended, destroyed by handling over time.
As a result, in a good shape they are considered much more valuable than, lets say, a Lifelace that has great chance to have spent all these years untouched in a binder.
Outside of P9 and Duals (huge power and playability), a good amount of rare cards from the first editions also have an iconic status in players/collectors heart (Shivan, Birds, Royal Assassin etc.)
And last but not least, some very powerful rare cards have never been reprinted after the unlimited edition in december 1993 and are chased by collectors (Gauntlet, Chaos, Forcefield, Time Vault and so on...)
