Unique Prototype of Portal Starter Box

Post by dragsamou » Fri Jan 31, 2014 2:43 pm

Hi Members

Let me share with you that amazing MTG Prototype Portal Starter Box. A lot of thanks to the owner for providing the story and pics =D>
I got it from a former WotC art/marketing director, who explained that it was the original box for what became Portal, until they scrapped the idea of calling it Gateway. It has absolutely nothing to with the other magic "gateway" stuff, and it was called that because, like Portal, it was supposed to ease people into the game. The box has never been opened, as evidenced by the perfect silver seal on top of the box. It was also confirmed 1 of 1 because they never made more than this prototype. They obviously realized that 35 cards was a bad idea, heh

Very cool.

So this is just the box right? No cards inside?

Hi Tav

I hope that WOTC will never have let Sheperd Poorman print that Prototype Starter, but it's always a possibility, but as Rivals was printed in July 1996, if it was that Printing facility, it will have shown on the box, I presume....

Hi Mark

This is a Prototype of the Box, no cards inside.
Thank the lord! The thought of 35 unique portal pre-prints or test prints inside this prototype box was giving me a headache. Although, I guess until it's opened, if it had something inside it could just be a factory sealed pack of dirt.

Hi Mark

I was so hypnotized by the Prototype Box, that the eventuality of Unique pre-prints or test-prints, inside of it, just skips my mind till you ask about it :-D

I just noticed from the pics, that this box appears to open like a hard cover book, as opposed to a traditional starter.

Yes, I like that idea, way more easy to open than a traditional Starter, it was a brilliant plan, shame it didn't went through, but 35 cards was indeed not such a great thought.
