It's more surprising when you consider that many of us prefer BGS. I wonder what would happen the day that a BGS 10 Alpha card is auctioned...tromagic wrote:It look like the price of the alpha PSA 10 are 2-3 time higher than last year.
Even the common sell for 150 + ... It was arround 70-90 on free auctions last year.
Alpha is the key set for MTG.
The Gem mint alpha is the holy grail
BGS 10 alpha is extremly rare.
This unco (a cheap unco) sold 3400 USD :

The BGS 9.5 sell lower than PSA 10.
And even lower if there is a 9 in corner/edges/surface.
Clearly there is a gap to my eyes between a PSA 10 and a BGS that get a 9 in one of those 3 fields.
And the market price clearly show this gap : rare bgs 9.5 sold 300-600 when the PSA 10 is 500- 1300 ... big difference (see yesterday prices).
But for sure a BGS 10 is better than a PSA 10, this unco PSA 10 would sell 200-300 USD and i think it would sell for 3000-4000 USD now on ebay.

Well, I'm talking about normal tens (10*3, 9.5), not 10*4. Quadruple 10's are absurdly rare (as if 10's weren't rare enough...).tromagic wrote:BGS 10 alpha is extremly rare.

I checked on BGS :
8 : 461 / 8.5 : 1855 / 9 : 3898 / 9.5 : 2200 / 10 : 75
75 on 8753 it s 0.86 % that are BGS 10.
Less than 1% is what i call extremly rare
If you compare to PSA :
8 : 8,471 / 8.5 : 582 / 9 : 11,061 / 10 : 4,495
It s 4,495 on 25,604 : 17.5 % are gem mint
0.86 % vs 17.5 % !

But they don't mean much without quantifiable criteria for what makes a 10. Does BGS publish why something would be a 9.5 instead of 10? Would a 10 always come back a 10 no matter how many times you opened it and graded it again?

Of those 75 BGS 10's, how many actually have all 4 subgrades at 10? That would be an interesting number.

I am almost sure they would not get those 10 sub all the time, but 9.5 is pretty sure.l0qii wrote:

It s the same for PSA 10. They would sure get 9 but not 10 all the time.
Jon, would you please make the test for us ? you open all the 35 alphas BGS 10 and submit them raw and tell us the truth about BGS 10 ?
PS : don t ask me to open my alpha PSA 10 to make the test with PSA on my side: I live in France, there is too much risk to ship cards like that over seas ...
I collect old MTG cards.

Of course, the values on all of these is based on an assumption that graders do not have Mondays, in-law problems, girlfrineds cheating on them or wives going through that delicate time of a womens' life.
It also assumes that people in these companies are 100% immune to favoritism, clout and payola.(which I would like very much to believe...but...).
As mentioned above, there is No empirical, detailed, published deffinition as to what constitutes the difference between each of those grades.
Now, factor luck into those numbers above, please.

And I'd also add that BGS could get less strict in the future. That's why I'm happy with 9's.mystical_tutor wrote:Of course, the values on all of these is based on an assumption that graders do not have Mondays, in-law problems, girlfrineds cheating on them or wives going through that delicate time of a womens' life.
