You should buy up a BEAT lotus on ebay, alter it up, and you'd prolly double your money.

I don't think so... There would be one less legal Black Lotus in the world. :-( But at least you would make all the other Black Lotuses slightly more valuable! :-P

Not necessarily.
All the big events I've played lately have allowed extended arts.
Even at the 1230 man Legacy at GP Chicago!

We must be Veeerrrryyyy careful how we say that. After an extended conversation with a level 4 judge I got this difinitive answer:

"Official stance? Well, (a) we're dealing with (C)[copyright] issues, but that's not really a judging concern; (b) the card has to be recognizable by its art - not by the name or rules text! - so some" ... "alterations could be allowed by some judges in some events. (How's that for nebulous?)"

This was said by a judge that likes some alternate art. In other words "player beware". This is just subjective enough that it could cause the worse problem at the worse time.

What I meant by 'legal' is that the head judge was asked and they said yes.

The head judge of any event is the ultimate authority for determining if (and which) altered cards are legal for that tournament.
There is no general answer. The most important point is that the card has to be easily recognizable for its art from 2-3 feet distance. Your opponent should be able to recognize it at first glance.
And of course the alteration should not make the card itself marked, that is recognizable from the other cards in your deck while it is in your deck.

I HATE PLAYSETS, but for friends I make exceptions.
I cannot take a better pic as I snapped this quickly before they were sent out ...
