i just checked the registration process here.
Somehow the "double opt in registration" is not active here ( an activation link is sent to your registered mailaddress, click on this link, then your accounts gets activated.
This option should keep off all those random generated accounts.
I dont know if this exist in this old phpbb version already.

Looking at it right now. So, I have changed the setting to Enable account activation by User instead of Administrator, let's see , how it goes. I have to take it off immediately and gets back to Administrator, as bots join the forum.
