I often use this service:

www.esnipe.com

I am certain that it saves money in the long run, even in the short run.  Often times a small war happens between you and one other person, so if you snipe, they don't realize that they may need to raise their bid.

I have paid them $5.00 and I still have almost all of my credits left.

i actually believe snipping only works when others are doing it.  i mean, if everyone's max bid really *is* their max bid (and assuming no new bidders appear) snipping will get you the same price you would have otherwise gotten.
Sniping works because not everyone knows the real value of what they're bidding on.  Making a bid is your way of placing a tangible value on the item, and if you are more informed than the other bidders you can end up with some bargains.  If you place a high bid right away you are letting people know that there may be more to the items up for bid than they first believed.  This could lead to them doing research and upping their bid (or really realizing what their max bid is, and not just going with what they hope they can get an item for).  Of course, sniping is also just a simple way of beating newbies in a bidding war -- at least the type that only enter the minimum bid each time.

Also, I find it unfair because most interesting auctions finish while European people (except Dragsamou) as supposed to sleep, ie. in the middle of the night.

I think that eBay should implement a function allowing last 10-20 minutes bids ONLY to people who have already been high bidder AT LEAST ONCE since the beginning of the auction.

That would change everything.
1.)  mANY AUCTIONS END AT AN INCONVENIENT TIME FOR AMERICANS TOO, IE, IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DAY.  i USUALLY LIST AUCTIONS LATER AT NIGHT, THUS aMERICANS ARE STILL AWAKE, AND IT ISNT THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT IN eUROPE.

2.)  wORST IDEA EVER.  IT WOULD REALLY SUCK IF THEY DID THAT.

I only snipe if I happen along the auction right as it is about to end.  I pretty much always bid what I am willing to pay, and if someone overbids me more power to em.

As someone who sells a LOT I don't mind the seller getting all the money his/her card is worth, so it works out in the end..

Yup. I've seen Drag snipping from his computer, and it's quite impressive. Something a la Shaolin monk, with incense, new-age music in the background, and suddenly, *bang* the auction is gone in a flash.
I've learnt a lot from him.  ;D

Why?
That would just be terrible.  By bidding in the last 10 minutes only, I have gotten some good values on things that would otherwise be more expensive, or *too* expensive.  I need to spread my money as far as I can, and bidding only in the last few minutes really helps.

Agreed, limiting bidding in the last X minutes would only decrease final prices for auction items.  Sellers makes less profit, eBay makes less profit.  There's really no incentive for the company.  Quite seriously, snipers are good for business.

Plus, there actually are people who don't find out about an auction until the very end of it.  There aren't as many people like that as there are snipers, but should they be excluded from bidding?
