very classical cases of misprints

Post by l0qii » Fri Oct 17, 2003 11:44 pm

Has anyone ever compiled a list of cards that have multiple printing variations, but aren't rare, or misprintes, or anything?
For example, Runesword with the "hairy" and "non-hairy" versions, or Desert, which actually has 2 nearly identical pieces or artwork. The only difference being a white dot about a mm across in the center.

These aren't really rarities because both versions are equally common, and they aren't really misprints per se. In any case they aren't listed here, and they aren't listed on squt's misprint page. Are there other occurances like these out there? And should they be documented somewhere?

Why don't you start a list right here, for lack of a better place?

I would consider these cards to be very classical cases of misprints. They are a product of a whole print run, and, due to multiple copies per print sheet, they also have non-misprinted counterparts of equal rarity. If I am to add misprints, these cards will be the first to be added.

Yeah, actually the Gaea's Touch is what made me think of it. I was sifting through a pile of Dark cards and found a bunch of those. It got me thinking. I wonder how many newer collectors don't even realise these exist? I have both versions in my sets, because I always though of them as the same as the dark/light variations in arabians. I haven't heard of anything like this in any newer sets though.

I think I've found one more, though I've never seen it mentioned. I've got two versions of Snap from Urza's Legacy (English): some that are normal and some that have a faint pink squiggles going through the mana cost. I kind of assumed it was a prerelease misprint, or something like that. Anyone confirm from your collections?

Does someone here have a scan of the alternate Desert from arabian night? I have searched everywhere, but it sounds more like a rumor than anything else... I've never seen it.

I have about 30 of the deserts and mine don't have any thing different on them that I can tell. So I would love to see a scan also please.

At first it looks like any random printing defect, but from what I heard this was retouched on the art itself, or at least on the copy of the art that went to the printers. About half the Deserts have this dot.

I would say a little under half, but a WHOLE lot of them have it.

I always called it the man lost in the desert, flashing a mirror to call for help variant..;-)

(indeed, they have been auctioned as the 'mirror' variant).

I looked through a stack of about 14 deserts last night and about 5 of them had it.  That ratio has been pretty much accurate through all my experience with the card.

Whatever you do, don't pay a premium for it, it's that common (like the hairy runesword).

Well, Desert was a C11, meaning that of the 121 slots on the 11x11 common card sheet, 11 were of Desert.

Whatever the final percentage of these "mirror" variations is, it will be something out of 11.

Ohh... to spend 15 minutes with the AN uncut sheets...

Thanks for the picture now I know what I was looking for unfortunately the only one I have is a played card would you be willing to trade a mint one for another one mint without the dot. I could send a self adressed envolope with a stamp on it with it so it wouldn't cost you a dime.

This sounds like when I was making a deal for an old computer keyboard; shipping cost twice what the item was worth.
