king of magic
I met the guy with the largest magic collection on the east coast last night. Pretty nice guy. He was telling me about all sorts of things he had that I'd never heard of. Has anyone heard of cards that were never printed in Alpha, but he has the AP for. He mentioned oddball and something else. He also talked about the card "there can be only one". He didn't have it of course, but I'd never heard of it. Also, he said he has a sheet of cards for each set including beta, an entire summer magic set except for 3 cards and basic land, and so on and so on. Nice guy. He had a set of pre alpha cards with richard garfield's notes on them. They were apparently cards he was working on as he was figuring it all out. He was in the same math class with Richard Garfield at UPenn. Apparently Richard Garfield wasn't the star math student :P. Anyway, I he was really nice. He was describing his standards for mint, how to tell if a card is real or not by using chemicals that ruin the card, and testing ink quality by burning the card. I would have asked more questions, but it's hard to talk when your jaw is on the floor.
I can't believe I ate the whole thing
Re: king of magic
"There can be only one" is the flavor text on the 1996 World Champion.
How does it help to know if a card was real if you've destroyed it with chemicals or fire?

Actually, the flavor text of 1996 World Champion is "It takes great sacrifice to make it to the top."

Re: king of magic
The store owner pointed him out and told me he's probably the biggest collector on the east coast. Then, naturally, I went over to talk to him.
I say: Hey, I heard a rumor you have the biggest mtg collection on the east coast.
King: Well I know it was at one point, not sure if it still is.
So yeah, I lied, but I challenge you to find someone on the east coast with a bigger collection than him. Especially considering the magnitude of unique items he has (the pre-Alpha pre-alpha-playtest cards with Richard Garfield's personal notes, God knows how many fraternal genesises (he sold 2), the other invites, every card in magic MINT [dead mint. He described his standard to me, which took about 30 minutes, which involves micrometers and spectroscopy...plus other stuff])
Anyway, yes I lied, but I didn't think anyone would call me on it.

Re: king of magic
I would have been surprised! Not on the quality and quantity of his collection but the only time I met with Trevor, he did not seem the kind of person to talk 30 minutes about his definition of Mint :)
