US Post Office
Good to know I'm not the only one who has been having problems lately with the US Post Office

Re: US Post Office
That is sad. Mainly because when the thieves realize how unique it is and how hot it will be to sell it, they will just melt it down and sell it for the gold value. Just as happened to many Egyptian artifacts from the 18th dynasy.l0qii wrote:Good to know I'm not the only one who has been having problems lately with the US Post Office

I don't even want to think about that. Plus, you notice, the employees were "disciplined". Like maybe docked a day's pay or got a letter in their file (which will make no difference if they are close to retirement anyway).l0qii wrote:The fact that something sent Registered Mail went missing in the first place is what is really troublesome. Registered Mail is supposed to be accounted for at all times, signed for by every handler and kept under lock and key.
I have had concerns about the "contract" post offices we have nowdays. The registration number is only hand written and does not even show up on the machine printed reciept. The employees work for the contractor and not USPS, if I understand correctly.
Now there is room for error.

Yeah I wondered that myself, since maximum insurance I believe is only 25k. Smell like an inside job. But also, why would the buyer agree to this shipping method? If I had 400k to drop on a coin I'd go pick it up.Tha_Gunslinga wrote:If something's worth a couple hundred grand and that small, wouldn't you hand-deliver it or courier it? Or at least insure it?

It may have been insured. USPS/FedEx/UPS really don't insure unique items like that but there are companies (Lloyds of London) that do and maybe this was covered.Tha_Gunslinga wrote:If something's worth a couple hundred grand and that small, wouldn't you hand-deliver it or courier it? People who pay 400K for "nice to have" stuff usually don't dirty their hands with such things as picking something up.......

I was always told the maximum for insurance was 5k. Did this change or does it change with Registered Mail?l0qii wrote:Yeah I wondered that myself, since maximum insurance I believe is only 25k.
