Have you ever bought a magic card just because it would impress someone else? I think I have, and I think many magic players do.

No cause this will only be a loss of money. I only buy cards I NEED (HL, Legacy) or cards I WANT for my collection (Petcards, Foils, Oldstuff, global set, ...).
Why should I buy a signed foil card named XY, which I don't need just to show it to other players? Thats makes no sense to me. If you really do that you have to much money;)

japanese cards are lame ->
japanese cards are worth a lot and are therefore desirable

Last I remember Yumeya ( yumeya@gmail.com ) had a splendid genesis for sale for like 400,000Yen.

When I was able to purchase cards, I would buy cards to impress myself. I'd play them in decks and get excited to play a cool new card I got, but eventually it would wear off. When the excitement wore off, it was time to find something new to buy. I've been doing it a long while, but never got too heavy into misprints/miscuts or such. Just random foils and such. Back in the day I used to own all foil saga islands for my mono blue deck. I then colelcted gurus to play in all my decks. I picked up an alternate art tangarth for my cube. All fun stuff for me, but nothing terribly special or unique.
