Grats Yawg I haven't seen one of those in a long time.
I've been having a huge problem finding Russian foils of the angels I'm still missing.

Awesome Whelp! =D> Congrats on a great piece of your collection.
Another one:
On another note, man does BGS do a way better job grading. I don't expect 9 PSA cards to look any better than Near Mint anymore, their 8's look like Excellent condition cards. The few BGS 8.5's I have would grade PSA 10 easy and overall just look a hell of a lot better. Anyone else experience this?

squt: Sweet! That's the best trade - one that doesn't cost a thing.

Hey Ertai's Familiar,
It really depends on a few things. First off, the sheer number of cards you look at will make a difference - trust me, after a while you'll see the same stuff with BGS cards too. I also think this problem creeps up more in lower grades, which is why I stick with 10's and 9's only. I have seen 8's that are beautiful, and 8's that are... less than stellar (to be polite).
Finally, if you are only buying slabbed cards site unseen (as opposed to in person or submitting yourself) you can run into the "dumping" problem. Sports card guys have talked about this for years. A person makes a submission and the cards come back: some are spot on (most, if not all), some are undergraded (a few), and some are overgraded (a few). The submitter will often resubmit or hold on to the undergraded, as they are leaving money on the table otherwise. The spot on cards will be kept or sold, depending. The overgraded cards will most likely be sold, as they "got lucky" and hope to profit; why keep an 8 in a 9 holder when they can sell and get a "real" 9 later. Over time this can lead to a higher % of the cards floating around for sale being overgraded, thus giving the impression there is more junk out there than there really is.
The key to buying graded cards is not to use it as a "be all end all", but rather a tool. I know if I buy a "mint" Beta rare off of eBay from 25 different sellers I will get cards ranging from heavily played to NM (might get mint if I'm lucky - lol). If I buy a PSA or BGS 9 instead I know I'm going to get a very nice card. Will it always be perfect? No. Will it be mint most of the time? Yep... and if not it will be close.
I do wish card grading was perfect, but alas the graders are people too. In the end I am willing to pay good $$ for nice cards, whether they are TPG or from a reliable seller with a good eye that I trust - several of my PSA 10's were raw from sellers I trusted as much as PSA .
Just my $0.02 worth.
Take it easy,
Jared

As a company, we only submit our cards to BGS because our personal experience is that BGS are much stricter graders, and it means more to me to have a BGS 9.5 card than a PSA 10 card (we have never gotten a BGS 10 yet).Ertai's Familiar wrote:On another note, man does BGS do a way better job grading. Well, I don't get much in the mail but I thought this might be interesting to at least someone out there.
A friend bought an unopend Alpha deck from me and then took me up on my offer that if anyone ever opened one and the top card (rare) was a land I would trade him an unopened deck for it.
Well, it happened and between that one and another "rare" land a different friend saved for me I believe I now may have the MOST COMPLETE set of Alpha cards in any collection.
OBTW as someone may be wondering, The second deck I set him had an island in it too. A Tropical Island.
Now if I could get get all the Uncommons.....
