It doesn't have much to do with math. The basic idea is supposed to be Tap: Deal 1 damage, and also that the equation kind of looks like it spells "Niv-Mizzet" when turned on its side. Though why a being as supposedly intelligent as Niv-Mizzet would be using such a unit as degrees is beyond me.
