Event Horizons Invitational Cards

Index | 1999 | 2000-2001 | 2002

Event Horizons is a company founded by Sheila and Tim Weissman in 1996 which organizes high-level Magic tournaments in the south-central United States, primarily in Texas and Louisiana.
In addition to regular tournaments, beginning in 1999, Event Horizions had started to run Invitational tournaments in which 16 top Magic players competed against each other in five nonstandard tournament formats changing every year.
The winner received free Pro Tour Qualifiers for one year and the ability to help develop a new format for the next year.

There was 5 Event Horizons Invitational in total:

1999 Event Horizons Invitational took place at the Bowser Game Center in Houston, Texas on 20-21 November, 1999.

2000-2001 Event Horizons Invitational took place at the Bowser Game Center in Houston, Texas on 9-11 February, 2001.

2002 Event Horizons Invitational took place at the Strikezone store, in Houston, Texas on 9-10 February 2002..

2003 Event Horizons Invitational took place at the Midnight Comics and Games store in Houston, Texas (To be reverified) on the 26-27 April, 2003..

2005 Event Horizons Invitational took place at the Thor’s Hammer Game store in Austin, Texas on the ? October, 2005.

Sheila Weissman, Tim Weissman and business partner Don James.

In one format per Invitational, custom Magic cards were added. These cards were composed of color printed pieces of paper glued on a Magic card.

The Event Horizons Invitational cards were approved by Wizards of the Coast.

From Tim Weissman: It was not sanctioned competition but it was supported by WotC fully. They gave us prizes to award to players for every event.

EVENT HORIZONS INVITATIONAL 1999

In 1999, 16 different cards were made by the staff to be used in a Duplicate Limited format where all players had to build decks using a fixed card pool. Part of this card pool was one copy of all 16 custom cards.

The cards featured heavily modified photos of the attending players and, with a few exceptions, were signed by them. 17 sets do exist: 16 for the competitors, 1 for Tim Weissman who also took the pictures.

The Event Horizons Invitational 1999 was held at the Bowser Game Center in Houston on 20-21 November, 1999.

5 Formats in the following order: Mercadian Masque Constructed, Urza's Block Auction Draft (UBAD), Extended-Spy Constructed, Duplicate Sealed, Highlander Standard Constructed.

Lan D. Ho was the 1999 Event Horizons Invitational Champion.

From Scott Gerhardt: I can tell you that on Random Beatings, that is my signature but that is not me. The picture is literally of “some random guy”. No one knew who he was then either…lol.
Ben Bleiweiss and I both got in via last chance qualifier, and thus didn’t have cards with our pics.
Ben’s record was better than mine at that point so he signed the good card (4 Color Mage) and I got the crappy beatings…lol

Rob Lawing, a teammate of David Williams, played for him since David could not attend. David qualified for the event but could not attend. Rob was a teammate and a very liked person in the Texas community.
So they let Rob play in David’s place, and thank god he did because he was the only person who finished lower than me…lol. I’m not completely sure but I think I went like, 2-13 and he went 1-13-1…lol
On Mason Peatross’s card, Mason has a twin, Fletcher. The “not me” is because that pic is of Fletcher.

From Tim Weissman: For the one in 1999 we made cards for each competitor and a set for us (Event Horizons - I guess me). I don’t recall making a set for anyone else. I don’t recall a photographer. I took pictures.

From Jeff Zandi article in Pojo (12 December 2005): A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY.

Tim Weissman started this event back in 1999, the first Event Horizons Invitational was played in November of that year, featuring names everyone knows in Texas, some of which may be memorable throughout the larger Magic world;
Scott Gerhardt, Bryan Hubble, Ben Bleiweiss, Mason Peatross, Alan Tetu, James Stroud, Don “the Governor of Louisiana” Paul, Adrian Sayers, Cannon Boling, Carl James, Jeff Taylor, Jeff Clark, Lan D. Ho, Ryan Fischbeck,
Rob Lawing and yours truly.
Then, as now, the lineup consisted of top players according to DCI ratings as well as Texas and Louisiana players who had made a positive impact on the game in the region in any number of ways.
Then, as now, the event consisted of five mini-events played over a weekend, with each of the sixteen players playing each of the other players one time during the event.
Then, as now, the winner of each three round mini-event is awarded a very cool customized trophy, with bigger and nicer trophies awarded to the eventual champion and runner up of the entire two day event.
Then, as now, a small trophy featuring the back end of a horse was awarded to the player suffering the ignominy of finishing last in the sixteen man field.

EVENT HORIZONS INVITATIONAL 2000-2001

In 2001, each player submitted one card which was balanced by the staff and could then be used up to four times in an Invasion Constructed format. This set of cards featured random fantasy artwork derived from different sources.

The Event Horizons Invitational 2000 was held at the Bowser Game Center in Houston on 9-11 February, 2001.

5 Formats in the following order: Personal Invasion Constructed, Invasion Open Draft, Extensive Highlander Extended, Mercadian Block Auction Draft (MeBAD), Battle of the 2's,.

Skye Thomsen was the 2000 Event Horizons Invitational Champion.

From Sideboard article: The Event Horizons Invitational was held at the Bowser Game Center in Houston the 9-11 February, 2001.

A total of sixteen players were invited to compete, based on a number of accomplishments from high DCI and Pro Tour point standing to the level of participation in the local tournament scene.
Among the invitees were some of the names recognized internationally, such as last year's winner Lan D. Ho, PT Chicago 97 top 8 finisher Adrian Sayers, and Masters Series competitor David Williams.
Some names are not well known outside of the region yet - but just as deserving of the invitation - such as Texas Guildmages founding member Jeff Zandi, and two time Pro Tour attendee Zach Karthauser.
Although most of the players invited were from Texas, which has a far more developed tournament scene, Louisiana was represented with last year's state champion Dustin Flora, this year's state champion Donald Paul,
and creator of the "NetDraft" software Eric Lewandowski.

At the end, there was a seven-way tie for the first place. Organizers offered players a choice - have the top 2 decided on tiebreakers, or play a 7 man booster draft to determine the winner.
Tired after two straight days of Magic, the players were agreeable to let tiebreakers decide the finalists.

Skye Thomsen and Rick Burton came out ahead. The two played out a continuous draft using Invasion cards in the finals. Thomsen's first deck looked considerably weaker than Burton's,
but Burton had terrible draws and lost the match 2-0.
Second time around, the players fought furiously for the colors, both ending up with pretty terrible decks - but Thomsen's deck was a bit better. He was able to press the advantage, going 2-0 again to win the title.

EVENT HORIZONS INVITATIONAL 2002

In 2002, a whole set of 330 cards called New Horizons was created by the staff which was used as card pool for a New Horizons Constructed format, where any card of the set could be used up to four times per player.

The Event Horizons Invitational 2002 was held at the Strikezone store in Houston, Texas on 9-10 February 2002.

5 Formats in the following order: Dreams and Nightmares, Invasion Silent Auction Draft, New Horizons Constructed, Odyssey Double Draft, Type I Scavenger Hunt.

Bryan Hubble was the 2002 Event Horizons Invitational Champion.

From Sideboard article: The Event Horizons Invitational is an annual event modeled in many ways after the actual Duelist Invitational.
Organized by Tim and Sheila Weissman, with much help from Don James, Jr., the event has grown in popularity and become a mainstay in the eyes of the Texas and Louisiana Magic population.

Each year, Tim and Don work hard to develop fun, skillful and unique formats for the competition that invites 16 players from the Texas/Louisiana region.
The players are awarded invites based on a mixture of set criteria, player votes, qualifiers and Event Horizons picks.

The winner receives free Pro Tour Qualifiers for a year, the title of Event Horizons Champion, and the ability to help develop a format for the next year.
There are trophies for each format and a trophy for the overall champion. Also, each player who attends receives a box of boosters.
The formats include three constructed events and two limited events. One of the limited formats is an Auction Draft. A tradition has been the use of unique cards produced for the event.

In the first year a duplicate sealed format included 16 new cards with invitees' pictures on them.

For the second year, invitees were allowed to develop one card of their own to be used in a constructed deck.

This year, the players built constructed decks from a complete 330 card Magic set developed by Tim and Don. Then they were given their proxy decks that had each and every card with art and flavor text to play in the event.

The running joke down in Texas is whether Tim and Don have a little too much time on their hands. However, the players sure aren't complaining when they get an invite to play in this unique event.

EVENT HORIZONS INVITATIONAL 2003

The Event Horizons Invitational 2003 took place at the Midnight Comics and Games store in Houston, Texas (To be reverified)

5 Formats in the following order: 4-way Solomon Draft, Build a Better Mousetrap, MQ Draft, Your Own Set of Rules, Complete the Block.

Neil Reeves was the 2003 Event Horizons Invitational Champion.

From Sideboard Coverage: Dagnabit! Neil Reeves won the Event Horizons Invitational.

After 15 rounds in a variety of formats designed exclusively for this event, top seeded Neil Reeves faced off against his nearest competitor, Trent Boneau, in a one-on-one Onslaught Legions booster draft to determine the title.
The winner of the event received free entry into all Event Horizons tournaments for the coming year. On the Pro Tour gravy train and unable to play in qualifiers, this meant Neil was playing for about $20-the cost of entry to a Grand Prix.

It is a testament to the level of fun instilled in this tournament by Tim Weissman and Don James of Event Horizons. Plus, never underestimate pride as a motivating factor.
The recent Texas transplant wanted to be recognized as the champion and when he enchanted his Wirewood Elf with his first pick Mythic Proportions and swung in for the victory the man as known for the toothpick inevitably in his mouth as his limited format dominance was the Event Horizons Champion!

Congratulations Neil!
