Citadel Gaming was a company founded by Mixe Brixius and Tom Ebling which specialized in the production of tokens for Magic the Gathering.
Printed on a material called sentra, the first wave consisting of 11 different tokens, called Alpha, was released in July 1995 with a print run of 50,000.
All Alpha tokens featured a black border which was erroneously placed too close to the edges of the tokens, thereby causing the color to smear around the edges.
Therefore, three months after the release, a second series of tokens, called Beta, was printed without the black border, this time with a print run of 75,000, and the Alpha print run was recalled.
The Beta tokens sold well, and in September 1995, a third print run, named Unlimited, was issued, this time featuring colored tokens and multiple artwork.
This third print run, consisting of 150,000 tokens, was sold to stores in boxes which contain 270 tokens divided into 18 receptacles, each holding 15 tokens of the same type, but with random artwork.
In stores, the tokens were sold individually for $ 0.25 US.

When the original test print of the Unlimited sheet came from printers for approval, Citadel Gaming cut some of them from the cardstock sheet and glued them to earlier tokens to try them in game for color, readability and feel.
This test was printed using the same silk screen and inks as the Unlimited run before the Unlimited print run was made. Only 1 prototype sheet was ever printed.

Two of the three carryover black tokens (Caribou-1 and Citizen-1) apparently saw the artwork stay exactly the same from Beta to Unlimited.
One of the three carryover black tokens (Thrull-1) saw the artwork enlarged in size from Beta to Unlimited.
Some of the other Beta tokens, like Minor Demon, Tetravite, and Wasp, saw both a color change and the enlarged artwork in Unlimited.
A few Tetravite tokens that were brown in color (like Unlimited) but had the smaller artwork (like Beta) also exist.

Citadel Gaming closed its doors in May 1996. While the tokens sold well, unavoidable flaws in the printing process demanded manual corrections of every token, thus rendering the production unfeasible.

Citadel Gaming Magic Token measurements are approximately: 1.25984" x 1.77165" x 0.11811" (3.2 x 4.5 cm x 3mm). 4 tokens will take approximately the size of a MTG card.
