ORIGIN OF THE SALVAT CARDS: On August 22, 2005, in some Spanish newsstands, appeared some installments of a Magic encyclopedia in 40 weekly issues, where it teaches the basic concepts of the game, the rules, and other general information. The product was sold with a set of exclusive cards that form 8 theme decks specially designed to illustrate the strategies of the game. Aside from that, there were a series of promotional gifts that accompanied the installments. This encyclopedia was distributed by Salvat, a company of the Hachette group specializing in the distributuion of issues [of magazines and the like], and Hasbro, parent company of Wizards of the Coast. The product was not distributed by Devir Iberia, Wizards' authorized distributor for Spain, which started doubt about their "officiality," but after consulting Devir and Wizards of the Coast, it has been confirmed it should be treated as a 100% legal product, authorized by Wizards and valid for DCI tournaments. In each issue of the encyclopedia is given a booster with 12 cards for the theme decks. The first deck is a tribal deck of Rats called "Hungry Rats." These cards have a white border and the logo of a Pegasus, a mythological horse that is the logo of Salvat editorial. The first issue is composed of part of the chapters of the encyclopedia, a booster of 9th Edition in Castillian [presumably no different from normal Spanish boosters], a 9-pocket page, a starter CD-ROM, and the frist booster of special cards. The second issue went on sale September 13 and had part of the encyclopedia, a 9-pocket page, the booster of Salvat cards with the next twelve, and a 9th Edition demonstration pack for two players. The third issue went on sale September 20, and had part of the encyclopedia, a 9-pocket page, the booster of Salvat cards with the next twelve, and a binder with a picture of a Hypnotic Specter on the front and a Serra Angel on the reverse. The fourth and fifth issues went on sale September 27 and October 4, respectively, and had parts of the encyclopedia, 9-pocket pages, the boosters of Salvat cards with the next 24, and clear sleeves for cards. At this time, the distribution of this collection was cancelled without prior notice by the editorial, and they gave no explanation in this respect. The speculations have been in many senses. One points to the collection not having had the success that had been anticipated in its launch, and was cancelled by failure in reception. Others commented that the distribution had been scarce, and had not been uniform in all of Spain (a sure thing, for another part), and that these issues were difficult to find in some areas, and practically impossible in others. It was also commented that Wizards had cancelled the collection for pressures from their Spanish partner, because Devir had not been taken into consideration to form part of the editorial team. The last theory pointed to an attempt of a pilot launch (a regular practice in the world of distribution for magazine issues) with the goal of measuring the reception of the collection and to be able to prepare adequately a "real" launch. The case is that the collection ended in its fifth issue, with the Rat deck complete, but with the rest of the product unfinished. In spite of there being duplicate cards, like the swamps and some of the rats, the cards have a unique numbers, from 1 to 60, there are no numbers repeated. All the cards are unique. In January 2006, a TV commercial of the issues of Magic appeared. It had been decided to return to put out the rest of the collection from number one, and this time on a large scale, it looks like, that includes national television publicity. On January 24 you could newly find number 1 in newsstands, with its part of the encyclopedia, the demonstrative CD-ROM, the 9th Edition booster, and the booster with the 12 cards of the Rat deck, but the card that appears in the first place in the pack is different from the first number in the first print run. The composition of the cards is also different. Cards from 1 to 12 were included. Finding one more difference with the naked eye, without opening the pack, we see the new packs have been stamped with the number of on the back side. In this case 01, indicating that it's from the first issue, while the old five didn't have this numeration. The second issue of the collection, February 7, included the encyclopedia, the demonstration game, and the second of the Salvat boosters, stamped with the number 02 on the back side. Apparently the distribution of the cards will follow a sequential order, remaining as the following issues. Apart from differences in the distribution of the cards, the price of the installments and the promotional gifts that are included with the collection have also changed. |
